Youth Leadership, LIT (Leader in Training) and STEM Programs (age 9-12)

In today’s rapidly advancing world, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and leadership programs are not mere extracurricular activities; they are crucial educational tools that shape their future. These programs serve a dual purpose: they lay the groundwork for the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers while simultaneously nurturing the development of young leaders who will inspire and enact positive change in their communities and beyond.

The LIT Legacy Lab Program at Loyalist College is a dynamic, one-week intensive training designed for young teens aged 13 to 15 who are eager to step into leadership roles and gain valuable experience working with children in a supportive, educational environment focused on STEAM and play-based learning. This unique program is part of our broader LINKS Youth Programs, which focus on Leadership Initiation for New Knowledge and Skills, aiming to equip participants with essential leadership qualities, teamwork capabilities, and the confidence to lead and inspire.

Under the guidance of our staff, participants will engage in hands-on activities that involve assisting camp counselors, leading activities, and organizing special events tailored to our LINKS Youth Camps. This immersive experience is structured to foster a deep understanding of leadership in a unique STEAM-based camp setting, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.

The LIT Legacy Lab Program is designed to accommodate a select group of participants per year, ensuring personalized attention and a tailored mentoring approach. . Participants must complete the training week (July 2-5) plus a minimum of 2 weeks of camp (up to 7 weeks) to receive their LIT Legacy Lab Certification.

While completion of the LIT Legacy Lab program does not automatically secure a counselor position in subsequent years, it serves as a foundational step for teens to understand the responsibilities and rewards of being a leader. Graduates of the program will emerge with a solid foundation in leadership principles, ready to volunteer within our Summer Camps and/or other Children’s Foundation initiatives for the remainder of the summer, further applying their skills and contributing to the success of our camps and communities.
